Music Class Notes

Music

Internalization of Pulse

Children are invited to walk to the beat of a drum. This establishes the connection between what they are hearing and what their bodies are doing. This essential link is tested when tempos and rhythms of the beat change. This concentration cuases the student to internalize the pulse of music and make it the pulse of his or her body.

Note Reading

As a child developes the skills to read words he or she also devolpes the same skills needed to read notes. The student learns to read and recognize rhythms through playing and listening to a drum while looking at notes.

Exploration

Various musical instruments are regularly presented to the class. In each presentation there is first a demonstration of the instrument's normally intended sound. This demonstration includes display of the instrument's range, various styles of play and dynamic contrasts. After each demonstation each student is invited to try his or her hand at the instrument.
